large number of studies areconducted at the H. J. Andrews ExperimentalForest and seven nearby research natural areas(RNA's). During 1983, 63 academic and 21 agencyscientists were involved in 56 separately fundedprojects. In addition, 48 graduate studentsused the areas. Data from various monitoringefforts were used in 79 of the total number ofstudies, including 21 studies conducted onRNA's. Several factors appear responsible forthe success of the monitoring program thatcombines academic and agency research interests. The factors are: a vigorous research program, common research interests and goals, a spirit ofcooperation among the scientists, a coordinatingadministrative structure, clearly definedresponsibilities, and a centralized data bank.
