McIver, James D.; Stonedahl, Gary M. 1987. Biology of the myrmecomorphic plant bug Orectoderus obliquus Uhler (Heteroptera: Miridae: Phylinae). Journal of the New York Entomological Society. 95(2): 278-289.
—The basic biology of the myrmecomorph Orectoderus obliquus Uhler (Heteroptera:Miridae: Phylinae) is described, including details of its growth, morphology, phenology, dis-tribution and behavior. We document the temporal relation of 0. obliquus to its host plant,Penstemon procerus brachycanthus (Pennell) Cronq., as well as to species of ants and visualpredators that may serve as models and operators in a Batesian mimicry system including 0.obliquus. The morphological and behavioral correspondence between various stages of themyrmecomorph and the six most common species of potential' ant models is described.
