The purpose of this Communique is to share infor-mation, to promote understanding of live tree reten-tion, and to facilitate communication between thosewho are interested in ecosystem management of theforests of western Oregon and Washington. TheCommunique examines some of the history, current thought, research,and management practices involving retention of live trees during andafter timber harvest. Although the Communique focuses on retentionof live trees, some of the concepts and questions are applicable to otherforms of structural and biological retention.
