Harris, Larry D. 1984. An island archipelago model for maintaining biotic diversity in old-growth forests. In: New forests for a changing world: Proceedings of the 1983 convention of the Society of American Foresters; Portland, OR. Washington, DC: Society of American Foresters: 84-03: 378-382.
Three aspects of changing forest conditionsthroughout the world are 1) reduction in
overall forest acreage, 2) conversion of old-
growth forests to more intensively managed
plantations, and 3) fragmentation of formerly
expansive forests. All three have significant
negative consequences for the preservation of
biotic diversity. This paper develops aforest planning strategy whereby remaining
old-growth forest fragments are conceived as
an archipelago of forest habitat islands and
integrated into a more intensively managed
forest plantation landscape. The energetic
basis of landscape formation and energy
transformation is invoked to help guideplanning decisions.
