A seasonal study of forest floor respiration is being conducted at the H. J.Andrews Experimental Forest. The main objective of the study is todetermine how seasonal shifts in temperature and moisture altered bothfield and laboratory respiration rates and to determine how respirationrates are related to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. Fieldrespiration rates show a significant positive correlation with soiltemperatures but seasonal patterns observed thus far show that moistureextremes also have a profound effect on respiration rates. When moisturelimited respiration by being either too high or too low, DOC concentrationsincrease as respiration rates decrease.
