Abstract:

Japan and the west coast of the United States are similarin geology and types of dominant erosion processes. However, contrasts in the social settings result in very different approachesto landslide and channel management. Japan places great emphasis onengineered structure; ecological factors receive greater emphasis inthe western United States.
