Abstract.--The riparian zone has important influenceson the total stream ecosystem including the habitat ofsalmonids. Shade and organic detritus from the riparianzone control the food base of the stream and large woodydebris influences channel morphology. Temporal and spatialchanges in the riparian zone, the indirect influences ofriparian vegetation on salmonids, and the effects of man'sactivities are discussed.
