Fogel, Robert; Cromack, Kermit. 1974. Terrestrial decomposition 1973: a synopsis. Seattle: University of Washington; Coniferous Forest Biome Internal Report 161. 14 p.
This report describes decomposition studies conducted in the H. J. AndrewsForest, Oregon in 1973. Changes in weight loss and nutrient content ofleaves, cones, branches, and bark of Douglas-fir and leaves of big-leafmaple, vine maple, Rhododendron, red alder, sword fern Oregon oak, andChinkapin were recorded in a variety of habitats ranging from wet to dry.Weight loss is related to the moisture content of the forest floor andpercent lignin content of the material. Decomposition is slowed in thedry summer months, and there are differences in weight loss of substratesbetween habitat types.
