Yerkes, Vern P. 1960. Occurrence of shrubs and herbaceous vegetation after clearcutting old-growth Douglas-fir in the Oregon Cascades. Portland, OR: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station; Res. Pap. 34. 12 p.
Land managers often express a need for more complete infor-mation about the vegetative cover that develops on cutover areas be-tween harvest of old-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) andestablishment of a young-growth forest. The composition and densityof this cover frequently determines the management techniques thatmust be used to establish the new stand and provide for watershed andwildlife resources. This paper presents data on the frequency ofoccurrence of shrub and herbaceous species during the first 6 yearsafter logging and slash burning.?/ The study was made on 14 clear-cut units in the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest, located on thewest slope of the Cascade Range, near Blue River, Oreg. The unitswere in the Lookout Creek drainage, 1,850 to 3,800 feet above sealevel, with slopes ranging from almost flat to nearly 100 percent.Nine units had northerly aspects; five, southerly.
