Emeritus sculpture farewell event

Thursday, December 7, 2023

You are invited to attend the special farewell ceremony for Emeritus on Thursday December 7 at 5:00pm in the sequoia grove on the Memorial Union Quad. The sculpture will be deinstalled in mid-December and, in January, be transported to Alaska for re-installation in a remote spruce forest. During the event on the 7th, we’ll have hot chocolate, share writing inspired by the sculpture, learn about its next life, then turn off the lights and wish it well on its journey.

With the support of the artist, and as part of the sculpture design, Andrews Forest researchers have collected data about the ecological conditions of the sculpture while it was installed in the sequoia grove for 14 months. Data collection efforts included: Bioacoustic monitoring of the sequoia grove for avian communities, dentrometer bands to measure a tree’s growth patterns and water status, and an inventory of canopy biodiversity by collecting eDNA data from rainwater that moved through the tree canopy and down the trunk.
