Generative AI is changing the way ecologists work, creating new opportunities to make sense of complex data and move research forward efficiently. But using AI tools also means confronting important questions about how much we can trust their outputs, how transparent and reproducible AI-assisted science can be, and who has access to and is represented by these technologies. In a new paper, researchers share a set of guidelines for using generative AI thoughtfully in ecology, emphasizing that these tools should support, rather than replace, the human creativity, critical thinking, expertise, and responsibility at the heart of good science.
