General Stand Description:

This reference stand was established in order to study the riparian zone along the S. fork of Hagan Creek. The stream channel has only very limited terraces and adjoining toe-slopes are quite steep. Vegetation along the stream includes red alder (Alnus rubra), big-leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), and cascara (Rhamnus purshiana) with abundant devils club (Oplopanax horridum) in the understory. Upland slopes, adjacent to the stream, are largely occupied by mature Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) with a vine maple (Acer circinatum)/sword fern (Polystichum munitum) understory. Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is present, but in generally small amounts. The most striking feature of the understory on uplands is the abundance of sword fern.
