General Stand Description:

The TSHE-ABAM/ACCI/BENE habitat type occurs almost exclusively on upper-middle-elevation southerly aspects. Here it occurs near a rapid transition to a Rhododendron- dominated understory as the ridge crest is approached.
RS 28 is an old-growth stand (greater than 450 years- old) with a tree layer dominated by tall, seral Pseudotsuga menziesii and a well-developed emergent layer of the climax dominant, Tsuga heterophylla. Occasional emergent Abies amabilis also occur. Both Abies grandis (seral) and Abies procera (seral) are found within the reference stand.
The shrub layer is well developed with scattered dense clumps of dominant Acer circinatum in the tall shrub layer and Berberis nervosa in the low shrub layer. The Acer circinatum often reaches very large sizes, thus giving the understory a more open appearance.
The herb layer is typical of the type with a well- developed, dense carpet of herbs dominated by Coptis laciniata. Viola sempervirens, Tiarella unifoliata, and Linnaea borealis also have considerable cover here.
