O1  2 - 1.5 in.      Twigs, needles, etc. (L and F layers).

O2  1.5 - 0 in.     Dark brown (7.5YR3/2) when dry humus,with  
                    '80 volcanic ash; common fine and medium, few 
                    coarse roots; abrupt and smooth boundary.

E  0 - 1.5 in.      Very dark gray (10YR3/1) when moist loamy 
                    sand; single grain structure; loose when dry, 
                    loose when moist, nonsticky and nonplastic 
                    when wet; St.Helens  ash?); common medium and 
                    coarse, few fine roots; clear and smooth 
                    boundary.
