Status: New stand alone rain gage in the sheltered meadow above
the VANMET clearcut site was established in November, 1998.
The original gage in the clearcut was removed in Sep 2001.

Original gage has suffered immensely from its openly exposed
siting on a high elevation clearcut. Heavy snow and inadequate
wind shielding have been major problems. Gage is heated
with propane heater controlled by CR21X thermistor, and does
employ an altar shield. A standard raingage was operational at
the clearcut site from 2 Feb 1994 to 26 Oct 2000. A standard
raingage was operational at the meadow site from 2 Feb 1994
to 26 Oct 2000. A standard raingage was operational near the road
below the clearcut site from 16 Feb 1994 to 21 Jun 1995.

Notes: Original gage employs a slanted orifice where slant is equal
to the site's slope. Problems with leakage and gage evaporation
due to overheating have compromised much of the record.
Gage was tipped over and subsequently rebuilt in Oct 1993.
