Introduction
The PCS.2000, a mobile Doppler-SODAR ('SOnic Detection And Ranging') system, is a ground based remote sensing system for the measurement of vertical profiles of the horizontal wind vector and turbulence in the lower parts of the atmosphere (PCS2000-Manual_MF_20131202).

Measuring Principle
The measuring principle of the mobile Doppler SODAR PCS.2000 is similar to echo sounder or RADAR technique. The SODAR transmits short and high powered acoustic pulses of certain frequencies into the atmosphere. A small fraction of the acoustic energy is scattered back from density fluctuations of the atmosphere. Because these micro turbulent density fluctuations are moved by the mean wind flow, the frequencies of the backscattered signal are shifted according to the wind component parallel to the propagation of the acoustic waves (Doppler effect). This signal can be received and the frequency shift can be determined by a sensitive receiver (PCS2000-Manual_MF_20131202).
