      <title>NADP Network Detects Radioactive Fallout from Fukushima</title>
      <description>The National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP), of which Andrews Forest is a member, just released results from analysis of radioactive isotopes in precipitation in March and April 2011.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Radioactive isotopes of Iodine or Cesium were detected at 21% of the NADP sites.&amp;nbsp; Iodine-131 and Cesium-134 were found in low concentrations at some sites in the network, but not in Oregon.&amp;nbsp; Cesium-137 was found at the Andrews site, but in very low concentrations (our high precipitation totals put us closer to the median for total deposition) relative to other US sites (particularly Alaska, California &amp;amp; Colorado).&amp;nbsp; Deposition amounts at all sites in the NADP network were found to be below levels for public health concern, and similar to measurements taken by the EPA.&amp;nbsp; This study illustrates the value of the NAPD network, and the Andrews Forest program's participation in it.&amp;nbsp; The NADP station at the Andrews Forest site is funded through contributions from USFS PNW and Andrews LTER, and has been maintained through the hard work of John Moreau, one of the most experienced operators in the NADP network.&amp;nbsp;  &#xD;

      <title>Canopy Connections</title>
      <description>Canopy Connections brings middle school&amp;nbsp;students into the canopy of the old-growth forest. Under the guidance of professional tree climbers, students ascend several stories into an old-growth canopy using specialized climbing gear and rope. While settled in &amp;ldquo;treeboats&amp;rdquo; high up in the canopy, students engage in creative writing, art, science inquiry projects, and quiet observation time. The program is designed to provide a transformational experience and to help students appreciate the outdoor world as well as their own capabilities.&amp;nbsp;Since&amp;nbsp;2009, 450 students have participated in the program.&amp;nbsp;Canopy Connections&amp;nbsp;is featured in a new online video &amp;nbsp; by Quinn Moticka and on the Environmental Leadership Program's Canopy Connections&amp;nbsp; page.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;</description>

      <title>Valley Circulation Experiment at the Andrews Forest</title>
      <description>The VALley Circulation EXperiment (VALCEX) at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest started on October 15 as a precampaign for next year's Advanced Resolution Canopy FLow Observations (ARCFLO) 2012 experiment in Watershed 1, funded by Chris Thomas' NSF Career grant. The objective of the precampaign is to gain a better understanding of the airflow in the larger HJA valley, particularly its diurnal dynamics, vertical structure, and cold-air drainage and pooling.&amp;nbsp; &#xD;
 The flows in the forested valley are extremely weak year-round and are strongly influenced by the topography. The  bmM group  installed two acoustic profilers (Sodars) and two sonic anemometers to measure height-dependent wind speed, wind direction, and turbulence from 7 m to approximately 400 m above the valley floor in high temporal resolution. Jerilyn Walley from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, will do the data analysis as her MS research project as part of  VISTAS .&amp;nbsp; &#xD;
